Emmanuelle

Emmanuelle Arsan, le Terrain Vague, original edition, 1967, Archives IMEC - Fonds Éric Losfeld, LSF 5

First published clandestinely in 1957 ‘as a sort of manifesto’ in the words of Losfeld, Emmanuelle was called ‘the height of pornography’ by the Supervisory Committee in December 1967. Emmanuelle was to have follow-ups, film adaptations from 1974 and an illustrated edition by Guido Crepax in 1979, banned from sale to minors. In 1992, at a time when several publishers were making erotic literature their speciality, the ban on sales to minors was annulled.
