In 1971, after the Marighela affair, Pauvert tried to rally his colleagues for the copublication of a very run-of-the-mill pornographic novel, L’Enfer du sexe (1971). With Marighela, the united publishers had defended ‘a left-wing book’. To Pauvert’s mind, the same operation should be conducted in favour of ‘a right-wing book’, a novel offending public decency, so that each time a book was banned, publishers should take action collectively, so discouraging all repression, whatever the nature of the book. Only a few publishers supported this provocative confrontation. Pauvert demonstrated that the arbitrary nature of censorship only challenged publishers’ apriorisms about the public and books: ‘There ought to be an Order of Literary Merit, just as there is an Order of Merit for Agriculture, which would protect all those works that receive it from persecution’.
