Encyclopédie de la vie sexuelle, 7-9 yrs; 10-13 yrs; 14-16 yrs, Adults

Hachette, 1973 à 1981, Fonds Hachette, IMEC

Following the revolt and contestations of May-June 1968, a new attitude to the sexuality of the young emerged. Consequently, sexual education began in schools in 1974. The year before, Hachette launched a 5-volume Encyclopédie de la vie sexuelle. De la physiologie à la psychologie. Illustrated with drawings, divided into age groups, it was written by specialists from various medical sectors. A bailiff, shocked by the illustrations, lodged a complaint for offence against public decency, incitement to abortion and anti-natalist propaganda. The publishing group’s lawyer took the complaint very seriously: the director risked a summons to court and penal sanctions. The case was dropped.
