Elvifrance

One publisher, a ‘survivor’ of the 1949 law, is Georges Bielec of Elvifrance.
Elvifrance (1970-1992) is unique in the sheer span of its catalogue of illustrated periodicals in the horror, detective and erotic genres and by the determination of its manager, Georges Bielec (1936-1993), to resist censorship. The journalist and historian Bernard Joubert says, ‘Far ahead of other publishing houses, Elvifrance totalled more than 700 decisions’ [to ban their books].
Another record, it operated under the ‘prior deposit’ regime for 19 years, handing over 3600 paperbacks for approval before their commercialisation.’
